Getting to know each other
We shared interests whenever possible.
But - we never forgot - the student is a grown up and independent
person.
Several students visited the local discos and got Danish friends.
One got a good grasp of Danish.
Three celebrated the Christmas with us.
How to live together with 35 students
much younger than you?
During the 14 years we have hosted 30 American
students and 5 DIS students from other countries.
In most cases we lived together as one family, - eating together ,
exchanging viewpoints, learning languages.
A few liked to cook for us sometimes, but
- we always agreed on sharing the household chores from day 1-
We have been watching films on TV and video. A few played the piano.
We got to know the state they came from, their history, their friends
and family.
We made excursions to beaches, museums, woods, theaters, etc.
The highlight of the day was the
conversation at the evening meal.
It often lasted for more than an hour.

A few of the students attended service and
said grace. Some lived according to Jewish traditions, one was a Muslim,
but their various traditions did not influence our living together.
