DIS Host Family

Why did the aftershock hit us so badly?

We expected a balanced consideration but we were met with arrogance.

We realized DIS has adopted a closed information system about host families.

Families  have no access to information about themselves in DIS's archives.

Over the years input from students - true or false - is stored in the system.

It is - obviously - a secret who has access to the information in these archives.

How did it end up that way?

DIS was started on an idealistic idea.

Having students staying with families fits nicely into the idealistic idea.

Families should not make a profit.

This idealistic approach was still predominant when we started in 1989.

Unfortunately, DIS has drifted away from the idealistic ideas.

The question is: Have the students just been turned into customers - and the number of customers  has become the criteria for DIS's success!

Consequently, the idea of the family stay has shifted away from the idealistic approach and has just become an item on the price list for the customers!

Has the whole idea just completely lost its human touch?

To new host families:   You will love it!

if you can live with DIS´s closed information system about host families,

and if your student is fair and do not load any false disqualifying information into it!

If he/she does, do not expect any sort of a balanced consideration,   check the page Thank You and Goodbye

The lesson we have learned

We have been glad to have all the 35 -nearly.

We have learned that families should not expect any help from DIS should a serious problem arise.

With hindsight, we should have been more selective.

We should have asked DIS to find another way to accommodate for 3 of the 35.

2 who badly needed professional psychological help, and one, who did not meet our moral expectations.

Had we asked DIS to do that, we would not have been in the frustrated situation, we are in now.

But “returning” a student who needs help, would be like kicking at somebody already lying down!

The psychopathic behavior of companies is best described in Joel Bakan’s book “The Corporation. The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power”. This psychopathic behavior leaves no room for fairness and personal feelings. But, like the psychopath, the psychopathic corporation gives a convincing impression of identification and care.
